Section I Wins First football Game!

NI won a close game this afternoon by a score of 7 to 6 over ND. Stephen Thomas and Brandt Pyles got beat on a long pass play down the left side of the field allowing Section D’s only score of the game. The defense quickly regrouped and denied D their extra point attempt.

Fortunately for NI the offense came into the season very prepared and scored on their first play of the season. Peter Calamari dropped back and threw a beautiful spiral down the left sideline to a streaking Julian Swearengin who outran the defense to tie the game up at 6. On the following Play, Calamri hit center Brian Bechard over the middle for the extra point which would prove to be the game winner.

The defense in the second half got stellar play from linebackers Stephen Thomas who had a crucial sack and Jorge Ohara who stuffed a critical running play late in the game. AJ Shanley made a big interception in the end zone from his right side safety position helping Section I thwart a late rally.

Despite all the great play on both sides of the ball by NI, ND had one last chance to win the game. At the ten yard line, on 4thdown with 7 seconds left in the game, Section D gave it their last shot. The quarterback dropped back scrambled out to the right and threw a bullet towards the right corner of the end zone. Katie Cunningham ranging to the right side of the zone from her line backer position knocked the ball down to secure I’s victory. Katie was subsequently mobbed by her celebrating team mates.
