The HBS ruggers capped a great weekend of rugby with the annual match against the HBS Old Boys on the undergraduate pitch this past Sunday. A weary, Columbus Day weekend saw a depleted squad, tired from a match the prior day, squared off against a spirited Old Boys 15. After a night of revelry and reunion (and rumored Hong Kong fieldtrip) the young boys were not on form.
Following an early Old Boy try, and a series of Old Boy penalty kicks, HBS countered with brilliant tries by upstart Josh Bresler (OE) and speedster Pierre Julien to bring Harvard within striking distance of a victory, but a flashy end move by investment tycoon, Scott Sperling (HBS ’81), in the closing minutes sealed the match against a battered HBS team. For the Old Boys, with three players over the age of 60, age was served in the end as they came away with a 19-14 victory. The vigor and enthusiasm of the Old Boys was a model for all.
Following the game, the two sides shared a BBQ and beverages with friends and family. Hailed by many Old Boys as their “favorite weekend of the year”, the annual match was a rousing success and the HBS ruggers await the Old Boys’ return next fall. We salute the Old Boys who’s average age of 50 nearly doubled that of the HBS current team – we just hope we’ll be able to beat men half our age in 25 years time!!!
