The HBS Rugby Football Club opened their fall season against an experienced Boston squad with several games already under their belts. HBS has put together a strong side that promises to do well in the NERFU (New England Rugby Football Union, the league in which HBS plays).
Eleven of the fifteen players that took the field at kickoff were veteran HBS players (see starting roster in this section). A strong showing was also made by first-year players – some new to the game, and others with considerable experience at the game both here in the U.S. and abroad.
The game’s most spectacular try occurred in the 29th minute on a full-field run by Jorge O’Hara (OI). A bobbled ball near the HBS 22-meter line provided the opportunity for Jorge to make a running pursuit of his own kicked ball – he was then able to take the ball in his hands near mid-field and cover the remaining distance to Boston’s try zone for the score. To cap the play he converted on the two-point kick.
HBS seemed to be outplaying the Boston men towards the end of the first half. A visibly frustrated Boston pack showed signs of disintegration, and at halftime, HBS led 10-7. The HBS forwards, led by veteran hooker and forwards captain, Tony Carango (OA), stymied the Boston forwards and played a strong game throughout. HBS’s front row benefited from the addition of prop Dan Gertsacov (RC), whose experience showed throughout the match and in his 53rd minute rallying try. Unfortunately, a late rally by Boston proved too much for the team, resulting in a 33-20 final score.
The backs were anchored by returning center and backs’ captain Shoney Katz (OC), as well as brilliant play from Jorge O’Hara, whose 4-for-4 kicking performance earned him “man of the match” honors. Overall, the HBS men made a strong showing for their first match, a match following only two practices as a team, and against one of the toughest opponents in the NERFU league. The experience provided by the returning second years and the new infusion of talent brought by the new first year players will undoubtedly show as the season progresses.
