Reggie Smith (MBA ’20) tells us what to expect this month.
April is here. Good riddance to winter! This winter was pathetic in every sense of the word. We got a whopping 0.5 inches of snow in February and March. Typical conditions would have brought us close to 2 feet. Temperatures in January, February and March were 8.9F, 6F, and 4F above normal, respectively. For those who dreaded or were worried about the cold of winter this was your year. See, you didn’t need that Canada Goose jacket afterall! Ok, but you’ll need it for next year, so it was a good investment.
April is a major transition month. Spring begins to arrive in earnest in Boston as temperatures average past 60 degrees by the end of the month. But it’s also usually a rainy month, with cloudy, cool days interspersed between days filled with plenty of sunshine and cool breezes. I expect this April to end up with slightly above-average temperatures and slightly more rain than usual.
The month will start cooler than normal with some days stuck in the 40s. A snow shower or flurry can’t be ruled out in the first week as winter says its goodbyes. However, expect some really nice, warm days in the second half of April with temperatures surging to 70F or more for a few days. The pattern is ripe for a nice burst of warmth. The inbetween will be sunny and 55F or rainy and 50F. Windswept rain is a hallmark of April; keep that umbrella by the door!
As we all socially isolate for now, brighter days will soon be here. The weather is about to deliver. I’d like to take you to a place where it’s 60 degrees, there’s not a cloud in the sky, and a gentle breeze pushes against the trees. That weather will soon be right outside your window, calling you to come out and enjoy it (in a socially distant way, of course!)
Reggie Smith (MBA ’20) grew up in Philadelphia and has studied the weather for over 17 years. He was the Meteorologist for the Spirit News serving over 100,000 people in the city. Prior to HBS he worked at Johnson Controls (JCI), where he developed large energy conservation and solar projects. Most recently, he led the development engineering for an energy storage start-up business within JCI. He spent the summer of 2019 at Marathon Capital and Eventide Asset Management doing investment banking in clean energy and investing in clean energy-related companies, respectively. Reggie graduated summa cum laude with a B.S./M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University.
