This week featured the RC IM Soccer Championship game where Section New B overcame a tough Section New F squad to claim RC glory and advance to the schoolwide final where they will face the winner of the matchup between Old E and Old B.
In a hard fought battle on Tuesday, March 22 on Shad’s Court 2, Section B overcame a strong Section F side to win the RC Championship in front of a vocal crowd watching from the track above. Section B opened up the scoring in the first half when one of their strikers stole the ball from a Section F defender and slotted it into the bottom corner of the goal. Section F fought back led by Derek “Pop” Poppinga and tied the score at one several minutes later. Section B then responded when Chad Jones, of Harvard undergrad JV soccer fame, scored with a trademark strike from just inside the halfway line. Section F again leveled the score just before half time. Both teams started the second half with a lot of intensity before “Insane” Hussein Al-Baya put Section B ahead with a left-footed blast into the upper 90 from a tight angle. Section B took control of the match several minutes later when Tom “Cupcake” Dye, in a move that his hero Ashley Young would have been proud of, dispossessed a hapless Section F player in his own half and charged into his opponent’s end before cleverly squaring the ball for a simple finish. Leading 4-2 with only a couple minutes to go, Section B iced the match when Jones won the ball on the right wing and then centered it for another straightforward finish. Led by Brooke Bowman and Eze Satz, who is as big a behemoth on the IM soccer pitch as he is in the BU bar scene – ladies beware, Section F pressed for a late comeback, but they were only able to manage one additional goal due to Section B’s staunch defending and Andy “Millertime” Miller’s stellar performance between the posts. When the final whistle blew with the score 5-3, Section B raised their arms in victory and their fellow Beasts cheered as both began to look forward to the school championship vs. the EC champion.
