Move over, Rooney. Heather O’Reilly, member of the U.S. National Women’s Soccer Team and Section NE Partner, is one of only ten players worldwide nominated for the prestigious FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal of the year, and with the help of the HBS community, she’s going to win it.
O’Reilly’s beautiful long-distance shot against Colombia during the 2011 Women’s World Cup earned her a spot alongside Lionel Messi, Lisandro Lopez, Wayne Rooney, and other soccer greats. Not to mention the fact that she is the only woman nominated.

O’Reilly described her shot against Colombia as, “definitely one of my best goals of my life, and to do it in the world cup was awesome.” However, she remains humble, describing that the World Cup experience was much “more than [her] scoring one goal.”
If there was any question that members of the HBS community show unrelenting drive and passion, they need look no further. O’Reilly started playing soccer at age 3. She made the decision at age 14 to consider soccer as a career, deciding “I’d really go far with this.” By age 17, she was on the U.S. National Women’s team.
Despite a rigorous training schedule with the team, O’Reilly has had chances to connect with the HBS community. She described, “In the last couple of months, I’ve really gotten to meet some great people in Section E.”
Her love for Section E extends to IM sports, and she plans to represent her section with pride. Keep your eyes out for her during IM Indoor Soccer next season. The Beasts of OB have their work cut out for them to defend their title this year.
