A few Harbus issues ago, Megan graciously provided a “Boston Bucket List,” so I thought I’d share something similar for Cambridge.
By now, I’m hoping you’ve discovered the unique things Harvard Square has to offer such as Pinnochio’s Pizza, Tory Row, Bartley’s Burger Cottage, The Farmer’s Market and Border Cafe (to name few). So instead, I’d like to introduce you to a hidden gem, Davis Square.
If you haven’t been over to Davis Square yet, hop on the red line towards Alewife (only two stops away from Harvard) as soon as you’re finished reading this article! Davis has become one of my favorite places since moving to Cambridge over a year and half ago.
While meeting many students and their partners, I am always shocked to hear that almost no one (including EC students and partners) has been to Davis Square. You must go! It’s the perfect area to spend a Saturday afternoon browsing
through the vintage shops and thrift stores before dinner and also a great place to be at night. Consider this your insider’s guide to Davis Square.
Not only will you find incredibly delicious pizza prepared using local and organic ingredients, Flatbread Co. also offers the unique experience of candlepin bowling, which is a tradition here in New England. Just a warning, it’s quite challenging; I’ve been there several times and am still working on my game. They have a great bar area too, loaded with rotating seasonal brews, and they are open late on weekends. Flatbread’s has a casual setting and is very kid friendly.
If you’re a fan of Russell House or Grafton Street in Harvard Square, you’ll love Foundry on Elm. It boasts an urban ambiance, expansive cocktail list, and a beer selection second to none. We recently celebrated my birthday there with
eight other friends, and the service was outstanding. This is a great place for date night, and they do take reservations.
Somerville Movie Theatre isn’t your average movie theatre, as you’re able to sit down with a beer or glass of wine to enjoy with your movie. As if it could not get any better, the movie prices are pretty cheap.
Red Bones has officially made the Best of Boston list for 2011. This is arguably the best BBQ you’ll find in Boston. They serve their full menu until 12:30 am every night and have 24 micro brews on tap. Overall, Red Bones provides a fun, laid back, and authentic southern home-style experience. As a Texas native, Red Bones has my stamp of approval! Along with Flatbreads, this is another great place to take the family.
Kick *ss cupcakes– Honestly, the name says it all. Choose your own flavors, or try one of their made fresh every day cupcakes — I promise you won’t be disappointed. On the last day of the month, they host a happy hour with free tastings
of mini cupcakes with cocktail inspired flavors. Margarita cupcake, anyone?
Looking for some live music? You’ll find it at Johnny D’s. Nearly every night of the week, they play host to local, national, and international talent and are known for their jazz bands. How about an Irish Pub? Stop by The Burren for a pint. Interested in watching the game? Try The Joshua Tree. Are you into the urban coffee shop scene? Grab a cup at Diesel Café. Finally, if you haven’t been to an Anna’s Taqueria yet… go. Just remember that it’s cash only.
Within walking distance from Davis Square, you’ll find Ball Square. If it’s a nice day, you can walk from the Davis T stop or bike from Harvard Square. You must eat breakfast at either Ball Square Cafe or Sound Bites. Long story short, over the years these dueling breakfast diners have been competing for the best menu (they have well over a dozen Best of Boston awards to show for it)…specifically their made-from-scratch waffles loaded with mouth-watering fruit. We’ve been to both diners several times replica watches, and you simply can’t go wrong with either one. Everything we’ve ordered, from the western omelet to the french toast (also loaded with fruit) and grilled blueberry muffins, has been incredibly delicious. Don’t be shocked when you arrive if both lines are out the door and around the corner — the line moves fast. You simply can’t leave this area without going to one of these places!
