What did you do this summer?
I worked in the Labor Relations and Economics group at Major League Baseball in New York City. Half of my summer involved determining player salary recommendations for the 30 Major League Baseball teams, specifically for their relief pitchers. The other half involved financial modeling in preparation for the collective bargaining agreement between Major League Baseball and the Player’s Association in 2011.
What was your background prior to HBS?
Prior to HBS I most recently worked in Strategy and Business Development for the New England Patriots. Prior to this, I was a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton and a research analyst for Spencer Stuart.
Why did you choose to spend your internship at Major League Baseball?
MLB gave me the opportunity to apply the skills I learned during my RC year to an industry that has always been of great interest to me, sports business. It was a dream to come to work everyday using lessons from FIN1 to help determine contract recommendations for professional baseball players. Doing so gave me insight into my future career goals as well as enhanced my HBS education with practical, real-world experience.
What advice do you have for RCs looking for summer internships?
The summer between your RC/EC year is an opportunity to pursue a dream job and to help determine which career is the best fit for you. When you enter recruiting, don’t hesitate to reach out to the HBS network through everything from clubs to classcards in pursuit of what would be the best opportunity for you.
