What:
MTV Networks and The Film Department
Where:
NY and LA
What did you do this summer?
I split my summer between two different media companies. I worked for MTV in NY and a film production company, The Film Department, in LA.
At MTV I interned in the International Networks Strategy group, which is an internal consulting group for MTV network brands internationally (MTV, NICK, etc.). I performed a cost analysis for their brands to help them streamline their operations as well as other competitive profiling and market sizing work.
While in Los Angeles I shadowed the CEO of The Film Department. The Film Department is most known for producing The Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler (which generated over $120M in the worldwide box office). I had the opportunity to be behind the scenes of movie making – attending and contributing to script, film development, and agency/talent meetings.
What was your background prior to HBS?
Prior to HBS I worked for the National Football League in the Digital Media group focused on Strategy and Business Development. Prior to the NFL I worked for Deloitte Consulting in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications practice and founded a wireless software development company.
Why did you choose to spend your internship at MTV and The Film Department?
I chose to split my summer because I wanted to see the differences between the business and creative side of content development as well as between larger and smaller media companies.
What advice do you have for RCs looking for summer internships?
If you have the opportunity to split your summer I would strongly recommend it. Splitting your summer allows you to see what you do and don’t like about various aspects of different companies and jobs, better informing your long term career planning.
