The HBS Green Living Program, a peer-to-peer education program that promotes sustainable living among the student body, is hiring. Through campaigns and outreach events, Representatives aim to reduce fellow students’ energy and water consumption and waste generation. The program is recruiting enthusiastic students for the 2009-2010 academic year.
You recycle, you bring your own bag to the grocery store, and you have explained to your grandparents the meaning of environmental sustainability. It is clear, you care about this earth. And here at HBS, chances are you aren’t alone. Many of us are concerned about the environment and value the idea of living sustainably. But as you know, recognition and concern is only the first step. The next step, the one that really counts, is taking action. That’s where the HBS Green Living Program steps in and lucky for you, the program is hiring.
Green Living at HBS is a peer-to-peer education program that promotes sustainable living. Through education and outreach, Green Living Representatives work to create awareness about environmental issues and influence behavioral change among the student body. Representatives design campaigns that target conservation behaviors of peers for a reduction in energy consumption (heating, cooling and electricity), water consumption, and waste generation. Representatives can also suggest infrastructure and policy improvements that may help remove barriers to student conservation. The program is supported by HBS Operations in partnership with the Harvard Office for Sustainability, and is just one of the many ways that HBS is working to make the campus more sustainable.
Last year’s outreach and campaigns had significant impact. Morris, the 2008 electricity competition winning dorm, boasted a 10% reduction in electricity use over the one-month competition. The week-long section printing competition resulted in many students choosing to setup their laptop to print double-sided on printers in Spangler, Aldrich, and Baker Library. The spring waste audit demonstrated that 19% of what was in the trash could have been recycled; an all-time low. With the help of HBS Operations and the Green Living program, we can surely beat 19% come spring.
