Spotlight: Tech Club at HBS

The Technology Club at HBS connects the community here in Cambridge to the rest of the tech world by highlighting new tech trends, teaching members new skills, facilitating recruiting, and fostering networking within HBS, Boston and beyond. While Silicon Valley may feel far away, our student-run organization ensures that students have the chance to connect with tech leaders and entrepreneurs both in Boston’s bustling tech scene and on the other coast through our trek events. Our 600+ members also have access to exclusive on-campus opportunities geared toward learning, development and building a tech-minded community.

THE TREKS

The hallmark of club membership is participating in the highly demanded and reviewed tech treks: WesTrek (SF/Palo Alto), NY Trek, and BostonTrek. Last year, the Treks collectively took 250+ students to over 80 startups, VCs and big tech firms across the country. Think Google, Instagram, Oculus, Lyft, Pinterest, Bessemer, NEA and much more. Many members have used the treks to explore potential careers/lives in SF, secured interviews with startups, and made new friends outside their sections through a shared passion for the industry.

TECH CONFERENCE 23

This year’s Tech Conference takes place Saturday, Sept. 16 and boasts a packed agenda with keynotes, fireside chats, and panels led by execs from Facebook, Uber, Hyperloop One, Amazon, Wayfair, Doordash, Tencent and more. The day brings together students, faculty, media and members of the greater to talk all things innovation from AR/VR to fintech to self-driving cars. All are welcome to buy tickets via techconferencehbs.com.

TRAINING THE VALLEY

Training the Valley workshops were introduced in partnership with the CODE club and designed to teach new technical and operational skills. Last year included six workshops, offered for free to members, and were developed and led by experienced instructors from General Assembly.

ALUMNI MENTORING

Last year, the club formally launched a mentoring program that paired HBS/Tech Club alumni with current students. With incredible response from both alumni outreach and RC/EC interest, over 100 pairings were introduced – many of whom will continue their relationships into EC year and beyond.

THE NEWSLETTER

Of course, we can’t forget the Sunday evening club newsletter, which includes a summary of tech-related events around campus and in Boston, exclusive professional and networking opportunities for members, and other cool resources/fellowships available to those pursuing or considering a career in technology and/or investing.

With other programs like Product Manager peer mock interview training and monthly tech-topic sponsored dinners, the list above is a merely a snapshot of what you can do with the Tech Club. Our goal looking forward to the ’17-18 year is to build on the incredible experiences of members and create a sense of community within the club through small-group events and other opportunities. Whether you’re fully committed to tech for life or just learning the industry, all are welcome to join to club. Stop by the Club Fair Tech table on Sept. 6 to introduce yourself and learn more!
