So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Good Night

I can’t believe an entire year has gone by. I feel like it was just yesterday that Nick Will (then newly appointed to the Editor-in-Chief position) took me aside to interview me for the position of Viewpoints & Features Editor. I wasn’t prepared for our meeting to actually be an interview and was put on the spot to outline my vision for the section, discuss my previous editing experience and communicate what I wanted out of the position. I was rattled. A real-life cold call. Thankfully, he overlooked my incoherent answers and took me on board anyway. (Plus, I’m not sure anyone else applied.)

My introduction to the editorial staff was actually quite representative of what was to come: being challenged to think on my feet, being encouraged to articulate my views and being surrounded by amazing people. I can’t think of any other organization on campus I would rather have donated my time to over the past year.

Before I officially relinquish my post, I’d like to extend a few thank-yous.

I’d like to thank:

1. The Contributing Writers and Featured Columnists. (See below for list of names.) Thank you for sharing your thoughts, feelings and opinions with the HBS community. Without all of you, the Harbus would have lost its spark and personality. Thank you for not being afraid to stand up for what you believe in. Thank you for letting me mettle with your words. And thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to commit your thoughts to print.

2. Nick Will, for “hiring” me, supporting me, urging me to continue writing and helping me out of some sticky situations. Also, a big thank-you for dedicating so much time and effort to making the publication a true reflection of the HBS community, an independent voice that welcomes all the interesting, complex often conflicting views inherent in such a talented, diverse population.

3. My fellow editors for making my experience so rewarding and pleasurable. And for bailing me out when I couldn’t make it to Friday afternoon proofing sessions.

4. The staff of the Harbus (especially Jen, Jess and Karen) for making the office such a warm, inviting, fun place to spend time and work in and for being absolutely instrumental and invaluable to the production of the paper.

5. The Academy (just making sure you’re still reading).

6. Everyone I harassed over the past year to write for the paper (particularly my sectionmates). I vow never to request a Harbus article from you again.

Below is a list of the writers for the Viewpoints column over the past year (excluding me). Sorry to those who I neglected to mention! Let’s give them all a hand.

Thanks again for a wonderful year of editing the Viewpoints & Features sections.
