The air is getting crisper and the nights colder, the colors of the leaves are starting to change and some of us (like myself) have started pulling out jackets and woolens. Yup, autumn is definitely on its way here! Boston has Indian summers so we’ll hopefully still have a few beautifully clear, warm weekends but as September changes into October and October moves into Halloween, those summer days will be all but a memory.
So it’s your second month at HBS, either as an experienced partner settling back into a routine or as a new partner making new friends, searching for a job, or starting classes at the Extension school. Hopefully the initial anxieties and emotional turmoil have dissipated somewhat. I’m not saying that by now you should feel like a comfortable, familiar old-timer here nor that you should be head-over-heels in love with HBS and its community nor have you seen all the possible sources of stress your student will experience in these next several months-no, it really will take at least 6 months to get fully acquainted and feel truly familiar. Heck, it took me 2 months to learn how to get around the campus-granted, I live off-campus so it took me longer than most. I just hope that you’re beginning to feel some wisps of joy and happiness about being here even though you don’t have as much quality time with your student and drivers in Boston are certifiably psychotic.
The Partners’ Club hopes that the events you’ve been to thus far were helpful and enjoyable. The Orientation Luncheon was our first main event and we drew hundreds of you with many bringing their kids. We had a WelcomeFest for children, the first Dining Club outing, a Wine Club tasting, a Mom’s Night Out at Liz’s home, and our biannual 1st/2nd Year Mixer. Each one of these events caters to different tastes and interests but each event was open to everyone. We’re here to help you and we can only do that if you take an active role in helping yourself. So let us know what you’d like to see/do/have. We’re always open to new ideas and constantly looking for people to help organize. Finally, I wanted to highlight a few of the fantastic events we have lined up for you in October:
o Harvest Hoedown on Friday October 26th. Our most popular event of the year. We meet at the nearby Codman Barn for a night of authentic homestyle American folk culture. Beer, square dancing, cowboy boots, hay and country music. Tickets sell out fast so get yours immediately. We’ll send out an email to notify everyone of the date tickets go on sale.
o Ann Taylor Fashion Show on October 24th. An annual tradition, this event draws all HBS women to see fellow partners strut their stuff on the catwalk. Plus you get a discount on any clothes, accessories or shoes you buy that night – it doesn’t get any better than that!
o Case Night on Thursday October 18th. Held semi-annually, case night draws huge crowds of partners curious to see what it’s like to be in an Aldrich hotseat vying for airtime and grilling fellow participants. This month we have the incredible Mike Wheeler leading the class on a subject dear to his heart: negotiations.
