Just as Bono and Madonna turned down their share of consulting firm and banking gigs, a group of multi-talented HBSer’s are putting their mouths where the money is.
“We are just going to have to become rock stars,” sighed Amanda Krantz, drummer for the HBS band Corporate Whore, which has a solo engagement at the House of Blues on Monday January 28th.
Formed via postings on the pre-matriculation website and a perfect cosmic alignment, Corporate Whore brings together the rhythm and rhyme of HBS first years Amanda “Maverick” Krantz (NB-drums), Neil “the Hand” Edwards (NA-guitar), James “Switchblade” Jarrett (NG-Guitar), Jonathan “Burnin’ Love” Waggoner (NC-Vocals), Charu “Leather and Lace” Juneja (ND-Vocals), and HBS partner Dustin “Thunderlips” Weinberger (Bass).
“It started with us talking on the web site about how cool it would be to jam a little at HBS and discussing possible songs,” said Waggoner, whose singing voice sounds similar to a young Eddie Veder, discounted 3% for inflation. Edwards added, “it was fun to talk about online, but I didn’t actually think we would get a band together.”
When they rocked as one for the first time, their sound was so powerful, the smell in SFP dissipated for nearly an hour. Krantz is the glue with her pulsating assault on the drums while Waggoner’s honey-mellow voice and stage presence seduce the audience. Juneia’s wailing leaves you breathless and begging for more. Jarrett’s jagged riffs cut the air like a turbine engine and provide the perfect complement for Edward’s eloquent chords. Weinberger’ s thundering bass makes Hell’s Bell’s sound like chastity’s chimes.
After arriving on campus in late August, the band had a few rushed rehearsals and got its big break at the first-year end of orientation party, playing a short set of rock and roll standards.
“We learned the music on our own, so the show was really only our second time playing together,” noted Jarrett.
Juneja and Weinberger joined the band in September and they all began writing and recording original songs in hopes of “having a hit, going on tour, and becoming famous,” says Krantz.
Something we are all hoping to do at HBS. Whatever happens however, don’t tell Juneja’s parents how she spends her evening hours. “I haven’t told my mother the real name of the band yet,” she said. “I told her we are called “Ideo”.
Tickets for the House of Blues show, only their fourth public appearance, went on sale last week and only a fistful remain. “We held a few tickets back for friends and family, so try a band member if you still need a ticket,” mentioned Jarrett. After the FIN 1 Final, Corporate Whore has what you need to make you feel naughty and nice.
