Try something – invite someone outside the HBS community to walk around campus. Chances are it will quickly become clear to them that this is a special place. Beautiful buildings, manicured lawns; everything seems to be perfectly in its place. Next, invite them to take a deeper look into how this place functions; witness the fresh sushi rolls in Spangler, the custodial staff who, like clockwork, enter class right at the sound of the final applause. Have them visit a class where a case protagonist is simulcasted into multiple classrooms by the IT staff, who know exactly when to quietly enter the classroom and almost never fail to deliver a perfect feed to 10 classrooms, right on time. For lack of a better description, let’s call it “logistics.” UPS has nothing on this.
To a visitor, these things are remarkable. For most HBS students, this is just part of another day in the life. With so much going on, it’s easy to accept all of the work that happens behind the scenes, so that we can redirect that energy towards startups, internships, community service, sometimes towards Tommy Doyle’s. Ironically, this only further emphasizes just how effective the HBS team is at delivering this amazing experience.
Let’s take some time to reflect on all the work that goes into our MBA experience and say thank you to the staff who work so hard to make it happen. In short, this is the goal of the Give Thanks project. Over the course of the next week, we will deliver to the staff more than 900 personal thank you notes written by RCs. Each RC section will take some time to show their appreciation for a specific group of staff replica watches. Delivering coffee and bagels to the break room or hosting a group lunch with students and staff is only a small token of appreciation for what is often many years of work the staff have put into HBS, however it’s our hope that these small demonstrations serve as a catalyst to remind us all to be thankful on an ongoing basis for all that the staff does for us.
How can you help? If you’re an RC, volunteer to take part in the event your section is hosting for a specific group of staff. Help deliver the thank you cards your section wrote. Take the time to really get to know someone on the staff. If you’re an EC, encourage one of your classes to give the custodial staff a standing ovation.
