In a battle between two of the school’s best flag football squads, undefeated ND came out victorious in a 52-40 showdown against a formidable NJ squad. It took only four total plays for both teams to score in a preview of the “track meet” to follow.
Section D quarterback Flynn Cochran posted a Manning-esque QB rating of 190.8, passing for 5 touchdowns, running for 2 and taking an interception on a Section J extra point to the house. For those lucky enough to pick him first in their HBS flag football fantasy drafts, that’s over 40 fantasy points.
After Section D went three for three and a score on their first drive, NJ came out firing on a crossing route to Melvin Ike who rumbled his way over 60 yards for a touchdown on their very first play. The former college cornerback, playing on both sides of the ball during the championship game, was shutout for most of the game by lockdown Section D cornerback Matt Attaway, whose acrobatic-like interception allowed the ND offense to take a commanding 33-20 lead at halftime.
Both teams continued their offensive prowess in the second half, trading touchdown for touchdown. Section D’s Bradley “Ice Pick” Brown and Meredith Uram (aka Megatron) combined for four touchdowns including a long bomb to Megatron to open the second half. However, thanks to the duo of Zach Heard at quarterback, Mike Czapar at wide receiver and athletic power couple Jonathon Penn and Ashley Jones, NJ was seemingly able to score at will against a Section D defense that had allowed only 100 points all year.
With just under four minutes left in regulation, Cochran found Attaway in the endzone to take a three touchdown lead effectively ice the victory. The Harbus caught up with MVP Flynn Cochran after the game to get his thoughts on potentially the biggest victory of his storied career.
“[Section] J has a great team, it’s unfortunate they ran into a “D”ynasty during their time here at HBS,” Cochran said. “It’s likely we’re the only team they’ll ever lose to. We’ll have our hands full next year. I’m sure they’ll be back bigger, faster and stronger with 10 months to prepare. We’re looking forward to representing the Class of 2014 in a few weeks against whomever we draw from the EC league.”
As the ECs prepare to face off in both the semi-finals and EC finals this week, there’s no doubt they’ll have their hands full in the school championship against a Section D team that is stacked with speed and talent.
