Harvard Business School’s 19th annual Project Outreach is scheduled for Saturday, April 30th. Project Outreach, organized by the HBS Volunteers Club, is a school-wide service day that sends students to nine different sites across the local area. Volunteers will be completing a spring clean-up for each of the sites. The projects planned include the beautification of a park entrance and hiking trails, painting facilities, raking and planting, and window washing. In addition to providing volunteers, HBS Volunteers will be supplying the funds for any supplies needed to complete the projects.
The volunteer sites selected provide a range of critical services for the local community from youth and community centers to drug rehabilitation programs to local parkland. The sites include: the Elizabeth Stone House, a mental health center for women; West End House Boys and Girls Club, a community center for at-risk teens and youth; CASPAR, a program for drug and alcohol rehabilitation, outreach and prevention; Wilson Mountain Reserve, a local park; Hawthorne Youth and Community Center, a grassroots organization offering a diverse set of educational, cultural, recreational and vocational programs; two locations of the Wellmet Project, a transitional group home for adults with psychiatric abilities; The Second Step, a transitional living program for battered women and children; and Codman Square Health Center, a non-profit health center with HIV urgent care programs.
Project Outreach provides a unique opportunity for the school to make a meaningful impact on the community and build lasting relationships with local non-profits organizations. The sites participating in Project Outreach have found that the HBS students’ volunteer efforts are so transforming that most of the nine organizations have participated for five years consecutive years. Additionally, HBS Volunteers has a long-standing relationship with the Elizabeth Stone House, one of the primary recipients of toys collected during the HBS Volunteers’ annual holiday gift drive.
HBS Volunteers has asked section volunteer representatives to coordinate volunteer recruitment. Volunteers will be organized and assigned to sites according to their section. The day will begin in the One Western Avenue Common Room at 8am with breakfast and from there the volunteers will travel to their respective sites. Volunteers will work diligently until approximately 3pm to clean, brighten, and transform the location to which they are assigned.
